How to watch a video file located on a server using an iPhone or iPad
After setting up a HooToo travel router as a WiFi drive and putting videos I own on the USB flash drive, what apps for the iPhone and iPad would work to play the videos from the travel router? The iPhone and iPad had limited storage space, so I needed an app to be able to play video directly from the Network Share created by the travel router.
After researching app capabilities, I found two solutions that I like that can play video from a server, FileBrowser by Stratospherix and Infuse/Infuse Pro by Firecore. With both apps, you add and save the Network Share where your files are located for easy access to your files.
I use both apps regularly and their different features help with distinct use cases. If I do have storage space available, I find Infuse a little easier to copy files into to the app for local viewing. Also Infuse can play DVD images in the .dvdmedia, iso, and VIDEO_TS formats without having to rip individual video files. Infuse Pro can play more file types and adds other high fidelity capabilities.
FileBrowser has more network capabilities, such as being able to delete files off of the server. FileBrowser can also play music files and open photos. I recently used Filebrowser's photo slideshow capability with an iPhone attached to a TV.
Both FileBrowser and Infuse can connect to different types of network shares and cloud services. I also use both apps when at home to play videos from a shared drive attached to a Mac mini and a shared drive in an AirPort Time Capsule.
I put together a series of tips on how to setup Infuse and how to use some of its features.
I will go into setting up FileBrowser and how I use it in later posts.
