How to stream your own music to your iPhone for free

(NOTE: Google Play Music shut down in 2020) Google Play Music allows you to upload 50,000 songs and stream the music to your iPhone for free. By using this method, you can play your music on the iPhone without using up your iPhone's storage capacity.

There are a few steps to set this up. But once it is done, there is not much more you need to do to enjoy your music on your iPhone (or iPad).

1. If you don't already have a Google account, go to google.com and set one up for free.

2. On your Mac or Windows computer, follow the instructions to download and setup the Google Play Music Manager. If you are asked to sign up for the paid Google Play streaming music service, just click "No Thanks". On the Mac, the Music Manager will be installed in System Preferences.

3. The Google Play Music Manager can upload music from iTunes, Windows Media Manager or from other folders on your computer. You will need to give the Music Manager some time to initially upload your music library. The Music Manager will alert you to any songs that could not be upload due to unsupported formats, such as WAV and AIFF, or DRM issues.

4. Install the Google Play Music app on your iPhone.

5. Open the Play Music app and sign into your Google account to play your music.

As you add more music to the places that the Music Manager is linked to, Music Manager will automatically upload that new music. The playlists that you set up in iTunes are also uploaded to Google Play Music and are available on your iPhone.

Tip: From other desktop or laptop computers, you can listen to your music through a web browser at
https://play.google.com/music/listen. If you want a Google Play desktop app, Andy Ihnatko recommended this open source Google Play app.

Tip: If you have a Sonos speaker, the Sonos can access your music in Google Play as one of its streaming services.

Tip: If you already have music files saved in Google Drive (or in Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, or Amazon Cloud Drive), CloudBeats can play mp3, m4a, wav and FLAC audio files directly from those cloud services.
