How to use an iPad as a second display for a Mac

After our computer cabinet was re-purposed as our TV cabinet, I no longer had a dedicated workspace for the second display I was using with my 2012 MacBook Pro. However, there are times when I still want to be able to use a second display on the Mac when I have multiple apps running.

While listening to a podcast, I picked up a recommendation from Serenity Caldwell at iMore called Duet Display. This is an app that runs on the iPad with a helper app on the Mac. When you open the Duet Display app and plug the iPad's lightning cable into the Mac, the iPad becomes a second display for the Mac. Duet Display is very easy to use and responsive since it has a wired connection. When you are done, just unplug the iPad.

As with any external Mac display, you can drag open windows or apps from the Mac to the iPad screen. Your finger or Apple Pencil can then be used for mouse control of Mac OS X on the external iPad screen.

Duet Display has a pro upgrade feature that allows the iPad to be used as a pressure sensitive drawing tablet for the Mac. Serenity has a review of Duet Display Pro on iMore in a comparison with a similar app called Astropad.
