DVD ripping software I use on the Mac
For convenience (and backup), I rip all of our DVDs for playback on a 2010 Mac mini hooked to our main TV. I could use HandBrake or MakeMKV to rip individual video files, such as Jason Snell at Six Colors describes, but I also wanted the capability to create a complete DVD image.
I chose MacX DVD Ripper Pro in part due to its feature to clone a DVD to an ISO image. In addition, MacX DVD Ripper Pro is updated to work with the latest DVD formats and has worked on every disc I have. It doesn't do Blu-ray discs, but that is OK since I don't have any.
I use an LG external DVD drive for ripping the DVDs on the Mac mini (the internal SuperDrive stopped working). Running this setup on a 2010 Mac mini which has USB 2.0 is not speedy, but it has been reliable for me and I can let it run behind the scenes.
For playback of the DVD ISO images on the Mac, I use the free and open source multimedia player VLC. VLC usually skips all of the intro material and jumps right to the DVD menu.
I turn on File Sharing on the Mac so my other devices in the house can play the files too.
