Download files from the Internet to your iPhone and iPad using GoodReader

There are times when you want to download files from the internet directly to your iPhone and iPad. However, when you click on file links in Safari, it just opens a preview of that file with no way to download it. Trying to save the file with the share sheet just gives you the web link.

GoodReader by Good.iWare is a universal file management app that allows you to store, open, read, and move many types of files. It also has capabilities to edit PDFs and play audio files. It integrates with the iCloud Files app so you can access files between devices and can download files directly from the internet.

In the following example, I want to download a public domain MP3 audio file of a bird call from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife website. To download a file from the internet to GoodReader, first preview the file in Safari, tap the web address in the address bar at the top to select it and choose "Copy".
Click on File Web Link Picture
In Safari, click the file link to open it.
Click on Website Address Picture
In the Safari Preview, click on the website address.
Select Copy Picture
Select "Copy" in the Popup.
Next, open GoodReader and select "Connect" in the main "My Documents" window.

The file address you copied earlier will be automatically pasted into the popup box. Just click "OK" to continue with the download.

Click OK to download.
The file download progress will then be shown. Note the trashcan to the left of the file name is just to clear it off the list. It does not delete the file from GoodReader.

You can now click on the file to open it or use the Manage Files (tool) icon in the upper right to move the file within GoodReader, rename it, or export it to other apps using "Open In..."

If you move a file to the iCloud folder in GoodReader, it also shows up in the Apple Files app (in the GoodReader folder).

GoodReader has many capabilities and if you are interested in finding out more, the app manual is available at the GoodReader.com website.
